What is social media and how can it work for your business?

The benefits that can be gained from a good social media strategy, are, but not limited to:
- increased access to your target market
- building of relationships with prospective clients and current clients
- researching and understanding what your competitors are doing and how you can differentiate in a competitive market
- quick access to 100s of people who should be hearing about what you can do for them
- financially low cost to join (but! you can lose a lot of time and money if you do it wrong)
- your efforts and time can be measured against the results that you are looking for (so, one ad in the paper reaches how many people… do you even know who looks at it? with social media you can see who visits your site from facebook or twitter etc)
- brand reputation – knowing who says what about you, your industry or your competitors anytime
- search engine friendly – your ranking goes up the more site you are participating in
- referral marketing – people buy from who they know and who knows who!

Social media is a new way of communication with your clients or prospective clients. It’s a tool for helping you to reach a wider audience and connect with people you might never have met face to face otherwise. There is no difference between face to face networking and online, ‘social media’, networking. The benefit of the online version is that you get to meet a wider audience with less hassle, and it’s more targeted and effective. The key to using social media as a marketing or public relations tool for your business is that it is only a tool and it’s what you do with it that counts!

I have found many businesses who have realised the value of using social media to raise their brand profile, they’ve investigated it, invested in it and used it… but now, 6months, or a year down the line, they’re not seeing the results they expected. This is understandable and perfectly normal. It takes time to understand how to use it correctly and to know the best way it can be used for your business. Sometimes, business owners dont know exactly how to use it the best way and this is where I specialise: training and teaching you, or your team, how to use it for your specific business.

No business is the same, every industry will use it differently and with over 450 social networks out there it really depends on which one is suited for you and your business. Think about it this way, if the facebook population is now the same size as the 3rd largest country, and your target market are on there… and you’re not, who’s talking to the people that should be buying from you?
