Web designers often overlook URLS, but they can make a difference. Simple, clean URLs can boost your SEO and make customers actually want to click on them. If you can structure your site’s URLs around the following tips, you’ll be on the right track.


Use words, not numbers

Long strings of numbers are not attractive to people or search engines. Instead, use simple, readable words and phrases, such as the title of your blog post or the name of your product category. You can leave out conjunctions such as “and.”


Use dashes

Punctuation can help to make words within your URL readable. Google recommends using dashes (-) instead of underscores (_).


Shorter is better

A shorter URL is easier for potential customers to read and is less likely to be truncated by search engines. Your URL doesn’t need to include every navigational page along the way; aim for under 70 characters.


Use one or two keywords

Don’t forget that keywords in your URLs do work for you. The ideal is to include one or two of your main keywords in the URL – more than that will make your URL too long and start to look like spam.


Stick to lowercase

All lowercase letters is the convention for URLs – it keeps things simple and streamlined.
