As an agency, I often get asked by potential new clients about what makes us different (don’t worry, this isn’t a blog in which I am going to spew out numbers of years, and how many accreditations my left leg has!). The issue is, when you go out to use someone else to do your marketing, the first burning question should be something like this – and also, my other favourite, and one I am looking into today, is “how can you do a good job at marketing my own business?”

When it comes to using an outside agency, you may be concerned that their team is just a group of interns, who just write copy, day in and day out, without too much worry about your business. Rather, they may solely look at your industry and your website, then create content that doesn’t really sing your personality. This is where an agency may cause you more issues than good, and that is why it is so important to find a team of people who are as passionate about your business as you are.

Now, of course, this is a two-way street. You need to share with us secrets, and insider information, like why you started, your personal passions, and gems about your team that will help us to get to know you. But these are all questions a good agency will ask you in their meeting with you, or within a client survey, so don’t feel you have to take a pack with you to a meeting (but sweets may help)!

It is a tough world out there, and with so many other businesses that do what you do (no business is unique), you need to show your personality and your unique-self, that will help you attract the right people to your business, through the marketing your team does for you.

If you choose to use an outside agency, then make sure they are asking these 7 questions (amongst others) to help you know that they really are a team of people who will be as passionate about your business, as you are, and create content that truly sings from your hymn-sheet.

  1. Why did you start your business?
  2. Who are your favourite three customers – tell me about them?
  3. What do you do for fun?
  4. If you have a team, who are they, what do they do, and do they have hobbies that they share too?
  5. What’s the favourite part of your business, and why?
  6. Tell me a little about yourself, your family, your friends.
  7. Where do you want to take your business over the next three years, and why?

These are just 7 questions I love to ask my potential clients in a discovery meeting with them, as it can really help me to get to know them personally, which I can then relay to my content angels, so they can create content that shows off their real brand identity and personality. No two businesses are really the same, because it’s the people behind the business that truly matters. This is why you need to have someone in your team, or have an agency, that really is as passionate about your business as you, the founder, is.
